Volunteering at Scouts is changing to help us reach more young people Discover what this means

Cub Scouts

Learn practical skills while having adventures with friends
The Cub Section is the third section of the Scout Association for young people aged 8-10½.

We aim to provide a fun range of activities which give the Cubs a chance to run around, learn interesting things, do activities in groups and on their own, play sports and games, make things, visit new places, meet other Cubs, go on group and district camps, earn badges etc. and we aim to do all this in the spirit of friendship.

Recognised by their green sweatshirts, Cub Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others. We have a strong Cub Pack with lots of young people enjoying excitement and adventures.

There are lots of awards and badges to be gained which adds to the excitement of completing the requirements, earning self-belief, confidence and being proud of their accomplishments both within cubs and with their activities and sports outside cubs. The cubs also have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of camps as well as sleepovers. For some a cub camp may be the first time they spend a night under canvas so it’s a real adventure for them!

The Chief Scout Silver is the highest and most prestigious award a Cub can earn. It is earned by the Cub earning all seven Challenge Award badges, six activity or staged activity badges and have taken an active part in at least three night away on camp or at a sleepover.

Cub leaders

All of our leaders are trained volunteers, working to make sure Scouting is safe, inclusive and accessible. Some lead the Pack week in and week out. Others visit occasionally to help run a session or drop in to share their skills.

Challenge Awards

Gaining a challenge badge involves accomplishing several more challenging tasks within the pack. There are several challenge badges across several themes, from the physical and outdoorsy to challenges dealing with the local community or issues connected with the Scouting world.

Activity Badges

Activity badges allow Cub Scouts to show their progress in existing pursuits, but also to try all kinds of new things and form new interests. Some of the activity badges are covered during Pack activities but you can achieve others in your own time.

Staged Activity Badges

Staged activity badges give Cub Scouts the chance to try something new or get better at something they already know. Cubs can choose the right stage for their skills rather than age.  With staged activities Cubs get to try the same challenges as Beavers, Scouts and Explorers. They can jump ahead to a higher stage if they are ready.
